Curcuma, an Indian plant species (lat. Curcuma longa), that belongs to the family Ginger (Zingiberaceae), grows in India and Southeast Asia, where it has been known as a sacred plant for over 5,000years. The plant in known for containing the active ingredient curcumin at different concentrations in the root. It is one of four different curcuminoids found in the turmeric plant, the others being cyclocurcumin, bisdemetoxicurcumin and demethoxycurcumin. We call the mixture of these four curcuminoids as curcumin and it plays an important role in the body's detoxification system.
Studies have confirmed that curcumin has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects and that it removes heavy metals from the body.It also inhibits bone breakdown and supports joint health. It has positive effects in diabetes treatments. Curcumin is, however, not very soluble in water, and is therefore poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.
